singing_the_dreamOur first ever New Community Rock Choir rehearsal was on Tuesday 7th September, 2010 and it was brilliant! Among the first songs in our “repertoire” were the classic rock song by Bill Withers, “Lean On Me”, “Hallelujah” the hit song made famous by Shrek(!) and the X Factor’s Alexandra Burke,  and the old hymn which made TV’s “Last Choir Standing” so popular with a stunning performance by Men Aloud, the Male Voice Choir – “Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah”.

And that was where our community choir movement began.

Steve Flashman had a dream one night and sat up singing, “Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah!”, much to the surprise of his wife, Sarah! It was after he saw that captivating performance by Men Aloud on Songs Of Praise. At that moment he knew he had to start a community choir, open to all.

Since then we have added a number of classic songs to our repertoire: “From A Distance”, Sister Act’s, “Joyful, Joyful”, Titanic’s, “My Heart Will Go On”, Abba’s “Mamma Mia!”, the Beatles, “Let It Be” and “In The Bleak midwinter”, among man others. Current favourites are those classic Leo Sayer hits, “One Man Band” and “When I Need You,” and that musical classic, “Memory”. Other songs include, Jessy J’s “Price Tag”, U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found”, “One Love” and “Stand By Me.”

We’ve had some controversial song choices too! Steve loved his arrangement of “Crazy Little Thing Called Love”, which included some claps and stamps (and not the postage kind!). Most other people in the choir just humoured him!

So the New Community Rock Choir began with a dream, and now we are turning the dreams of others into reality!

Now Community Choirs UK is born, giving more opportunity for people to enjoy singing with a community spirit.
